Central Region Sharjah: Mleiha, Al Dhaid & Al Badayer Guide

Central region

Mleiha sits 39 minutes from Sharjah International Airport and 49 minutes from Dubai International Airport, which is why most visitors treat Sharjah’s Central Region as a day trip rather than a destination that needs a hotel. The region covers the emirate’s desert interior, and its main hubs are Mleiha, Al Dhaid, Al Badayer and Al Madam.

Three things draw people there: the UNESCO-listed archaeology at Mleiha, the big dunes around Al Badayer, and the oasis town of Al Dhaid. Each suits a different kind of day, so the sections below sort the region by what you want to do, then cover tickets, stays and the camping rules that carry real fines.

Getting there

Driving is the standard way in, and desert safari tours also run into the region, with guides who know where to set up camp. Mleiha is a 39-minute drive from Sharjah’s airport, while Al Badayer sits about 65 km out from the city.

Camels cross the desert roads, so barbed-wire fencing runs along key routes to keep animals off the tarmac. Drive slowly after dark.

The hubs are separate drives, so a single day works best with one or two of them rather than all four.

Mleiha

Mleiha is the archaeology hub, and Mleiha National Park is where most visits begin. The park holds the Faya Palaeolandscape, which preserves some of the earliest evidence of human life beyond Africa.

Inside the park you can:

  • Tour the Mleiha Archaeological Centre museum
  • Join guided desert drives
  • Go stargazing with a guide
  • Ride horses across the desert
  • Take a Sky Adventures flight
  • Spot gazelles and desert foxes

The best-known landmark is Fossil Rock, a rock formation rising above the dunes that people hike and camp around. Camel Rock is a second formation shaped by wind over centuries.

Al Dhaid

The Al Dhaid oasis town turns the desert green with farmland, and locals gather there for camel races and markets. Al Dhaid Fort covers the history of what was once a prosperous oasis.

Families use Al Dhaid as the wildlife stop of the region. Sharjah Safari and the Al Dhaid Wildlife Museum both sit in this part of the Central Region.

Al Badayer

Al Badayer is the dune hub, and Big Red is its best-known dune, the largest sand dune near Sharjah city. The area is built around dune bashing, quad biking and desert driving, with enough dunes to fill a sunrise-to-sunset day.

Beginners can rent a dirt bike or a buggy and start on a beginner dune. Hiking, sunset watching and desert camping suit visitors who would rather not drive the dunes at all.

Al Madam & Buhais Geological Park

Buhais Geological Park is built on a former seabed in an area of major geological significance, and it tells the story of the region’s ground itself. Nearby, Al Madam Buried Village is a settlement that sand has partly buried since it was abandoned.

Fili Petting Farm, also in the Al Madam area, adds a hands-on animal stop for children.

  1. Choose an experience: museum entry, stargazing, glamping, horse riding or Sky Adventures.
  2. Pick a date.
  3. Complete the booking on that page.

Where to stay

Three desert stays sit inside the region:

Stay Type Hub
Al Faya Retreat Boutique retreat in a restored property originally built in the 1960s Mleiha
Moon Retreat Glamping with luxury tents and dome-style accommodation Mleiha
Al Badayer Retreat Desert resort with luxury tents and rooms Al Badayer

Staying in the desert suits stargazing and early starts. A Sharjah city hotel keeps museums and restaurants close and adds a drive of under an hour each way.

Camping rules & fines

Camping is allowed only in authorised areas, and the main penalties are:

Offence Penalty
Pitching a tent outside authorised areas AED 2,000, doubled for repeat violations
Leaving litter or waste behind Up to AED 2,000 in Sharjah
Dumping, burning or burying waste outside designated areas Up to AED 30,000 for individuals
Entering a wadi or flood zone during rain AED 2,000 plus traffic points and vehicle impoundment

The wadi and flood-zone penalty adds 23 traffic points and a 60-day vehicle impoundment to the AED 2,000 fine, which makes off-road driving after rain costly.

Camping fines are linked to the Ministry of Interior system, which means they must be cleared when you renew your vehicle registration. Other rules to know:

  • Keep firewood at least 15 feet from tents.
  • Do not cut trees or disturb wildlife in the desert.
  • Avoid reckless off-road driving and loud music, which police patrols target.
  • Expect checkpoints that check for unlicensed drivers.

Police patrols, rescue units and a dedicated operations room cover the routes to Al Badayer, Al Faya and Mleiha during camping season, which runs from late October to April.
