ATM Balance Check in UAE: 5 Quick & Secure Ways
Checking your balance at your own bank’s ATM costs nothing, while the same check at another bank’s machine costs AED 1.05 at Emirates NBD. That gap is the reason to know every option before you walk up to a machine: the ATM, your bank’s app, internet banking, SMS banking and phone banking.
The ATM works with any debit or salary card and a 4-digit PIN. The app is the fastest route when you have data, and SMS or phone banking cover the moments you don’t. The sections below give the steps for each, the fees by network and the habits that keep your card safe.

| Method | Best for | What you need |
|---|---|---|
| ATM | A printed record of your balance, or a check while withdrawing cash | Debit or salary card & 4-digit PIN |
| Mobile app | The fastest check when you have data or Wi-Fi | App login or biometrics |
| Internet banking | A full view of every account on a laptop | User ID, password & one-time password |
| SMS banking | Checking with no data signal | Mobile number registered with the bank |
| Phone banking | Checking by voice from a registered phone | Registered mobile number & telephone PIN |

Check your balance at an ATM

Any UAE bank ATM shows your balance in six steps:
- Insert your debit or salary card.
- Choose English or Arabic on the language screen.
- Type your 4-digit PIN while covering the keypad with your other hand.
- Select Balance Enquiry (some machines label it Balance Inquiry or Check Balance).
- Pick the account if the machine asks which one, then read the balance on screen or choose the printed receipt.
- Press Cancel and take your card and receipt before you leave.
If you pause after inserting the card, press Cancel and take it back before continuing. A long delay can make the machine capture it.
Emirates NBD ATMs also offer a free mini statement, so a single visit can replace a check in the app. A card from another UAE bank works at any machine on the Central Bank’s UAESWITCH network, but off-network enquiries carry a fee on most account tiers, covered in the fee table below.
Check your balance on a mobile app
A bank app shows your balance on the home screen right after login, and the check costs nothing.
- Download your bank’s official app from the App Store or Google Play. Emirates NBD customers use ENBD X, and FAB customers use FAB Mobile.
- Log in with your fingerprint or Face ID once biometrics are on, or with your password.
- Read the balance on the home screen.
- Tap an account or card to see pending items and recent transactions.
Turn on biometric login in the app settings so only your fingerprint or face opens it. ENBD X prompts Android users to set up biometrics before it lets them in.
The home screen shows your available balance, which is the amount you can spend right now. The ledger balance also counts pending transactions, so the two figures can differ after a card payment.
Internet banking, SMS & phone banking
Internet banking
- Type your bank’s website address into the browser yourself instead of following a link from a message.
- Log in with your user ID and password.
- Enter the one-time password sent to your registered UAE mobile number.
- Open the accounts summary to see the balance of every account and card.
SMS banking
SMS banking works without data once your mobile number is registered with the bank. FAB customers text BAL followed by the last 4 digits of the account number to 2121 and receive the balance in a reply. Credit card balances use CBAL in the same format.
Send the message only from the registered number, and expect your carrier’s standard SMS rate. Other banks run their own keywords and short numbers, which are listed in the bank’s app or help pages.
Phone banking
ADCB’s automated line answers balance requests when you call from your registered mobile and either say Balance Enquiry or choose the other banking services option. It needs a telephone PIN, which you set up by calling the same Contact Centre and choosing the TPIN registration option. The ADCB Contact Centre is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Salary & prepaid cards
Salary cards work at ATMs exactly like debit cards. The Emirates Islamic payroll card charges nothing at Emirates Islamic or Emirates NBD ATMs, AED 1.05 per balance enquiry at other UAE Switch ATMs and AED 3.15 at GCC Net ATMs.
FAB’s Ratibi prepaid salary cards have no balance-by-SMS option, and the bank only sends an automatic text when your salary arrives. To check without an ATM, use the Ratibi prepaid card enquiry page linked from the login menu on FAB’s website. It asks for the last 4 digits of the card and the Card ID printed on it, not the full 16-digit card number.
UAE ATM balance check fees
A balance check is free at your own bank’s ATM and costs AED 1.05 to AED 3.15 on other networks at Emirates NBD, depending on where the machine sits.
| Where you check | Balance enquiry | Cash withdrawal |
|---|---|---|
| Emirates NBD ATM | Free | Free |
| Other UAE bank ATM (UAE Switch) | AED 1.05 | AED 2.10 |
| GCC Net ATM | AED 3.15 | AED 6.30 |
| ATM outside the GCC | Free, where the machine offers it | AED 21 |
Emirates NBD’s balance enquiry fee at another UAE bank’s ATM is AED 1, plus 5% VAT. A declined transaction at those machines, such as a wrong PIN, adds another AED 1.05.
Ten checks a month at other banks’ machines add AED 10.50 to your statement. Moving routine checks to the app and keeping ATM visits for cash removes that cost entirely.
Package tier changes the figures. Customers on Emirates NBD’s Beyond, UAE National, Signature and Private Banking packages pay nothing at other UAE or GCC ATMs. Other banks set their own rates, so the schedule of charges for your account tier is the figure that applies to you.
Stay safe at the ATM
Six habits cover most ATM risks:
- Cover the keypad with your free hand every time you type the PIN, even when the lobby looks empty.
- Look at the card slot and keypad before inserting your card. Anything loose, bulky or misaligned points to a skimming device, so use another machine.
- Choose ATMs inside bank lobbies, malls or well-lit, camera-covered branches over standalone machines.
- Decline help from anyone nearby, and never share your PIN, card number or one-time password. Banks do not ask for them by call, SMS or WhatsApp.
- Wait until the screen returns to the welcome page before you walk away with your card and receipt.
- Switch on transaction alerts in your bank’s app so an unfamiliar withdrawal reaches you at once.
The same rules apply on screens. Install only your bank’s official app, type the website address yourself and keep one-time passwords to yourself.
If the ATM check fails
If the machine keeps your card, call your bank straight away and ask it to block the card. A machine captures a card after three wrong PIN entries, when the card is blocked or when the machine itself fails.
- Note the ATM’s location, the machine ID printed on it and the time.
- Call your bank. Emirates NBD’s card-capture line is +971 600 54 0000, and FAB’s customer service line is 600 52 5500.
- If the machine belongs to another UAE bank, that bank sends the card back to yours, and Emirates NBD replaces it free of charge.
- If the machine shows an error, has no cash or is out of service, use another ATM or the app.
If a withdrawal debits your account but no cash comes out, Emirates NBD’s resolution time for debit cards is 7 working days at its own ATMs, 31 working days at another UAE bank’s ATM, 92 in the GCC and 119 elsewhere. Raise the complaint with your bank first. If it remains unresolved after 30 calendar days, or you disagree with the answer, the Central Bank’s ombudsman unit takes the case through the Sanadak complaint page.
FAQ
Is it free to check my balance at another bank’s ATM?
No. Emirates NBD charges AED 1.05 per balance enquiry at another UAE bank’s ATM and AED 3.15 at a GCC Net ATM, unless your package waives the fee.
How many wrong PIN attempts are allowed?
Three. The third wrong entry blocks the card, and an ATM may keep it.
Does the ATM show my available balance or ledger balance?
Most screens and receipts show the available balance, which is the amount you can spend now. The ledger balance includes pending transactions that have not yet cleared.
Can I check my balance without going to an ATM?
Yes. Use your bank’s app or internet banking at no charge, SMS banking once your number is registered, or phone banking with a telephone PIN.
Can I check my salary card balance at any ATM?
Yes, at any UAE Switch ATM, with the fees in the table above. The Emirates Islamic payroll card is free at Emirates Islamic and Emirates NBD ATMs.
